This three-day intensive teapot master class with Lucia Ocejo explores the architecture of the pour through techniques for throwing and assembling teapots. Across the three days, students will work on throwing teapot bodies and galleries, experimenting with different lids and spouts, before moving on to precision turning, attaching spouts and handles, drilling pour holes and adding final details. The master class focuses on creating well-balanced, functional forms with a strong sculptural quality.

What you will learn:
● Throwing teapot components: Throw teapot bodies and galleries with different lid and spout designs while practising 2–3 distinct teapot styles.
● Assembly and construction: Different methods for making and attaching spouts and handles, with consideration given to proportions and the relationship between individual components.
● Form and functionality: Refine proportions, balance and details to make functional teapots with a strong sculptural quality.
Masterclass Programme:
Day 1 - Throwing Teapot Bodies: Introduction to teapot design, proportions and the relationship between form and function. Students will throw teapot bodies and galleries, experimenting with different shapes and proportions while practising 2–3 distinct teapot styles.
Day 2 - Spouts, Handles and Trimming: Throwing spouts and pulling handles, while considering the specific requirements of each teapot design. Students will practise trimming bodies where necessary and develop an understanding of when forms can be left untrimmed, depending on their shape, proportions and intended character.
Day 3 - Assembly and Finishing: Assembling the teapot components, including fitting lids, attaching spouts and handles, and drilling pour holes. We will focus on the relationship between individual components, refining joins and details to achieve well-balanced, functional forms with a strong sculptural quality. Time permitting, we will also consider different surface treatment techniques, such as carving and slip application.
Lucia Ocejo
is a British-Mexican potter whose practice explores clay as a geological record and an expression of place. She is interested in the mineral composition and origins of raw materials, using clays, rocks and ashes to create functional objects that reveal the material qualities of the landscapes from which they originate.
She holds a degree in Fine Arts, specialising in Ceramics, from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. Her practice has been shaped by an apprenticeship with Steve Sheridan in the Blue Mountains, Australia, and a year-long work exchange at Maze Hill Pottery in London under Lisa Hammond MBE. Since then, she has built her own gas kiln, furthering her interest between clay bodies, firing atmospheres and the surfaces that emerge through the firing process. Her work has been exhibited at Cambridge Contemporary Art and Klei Gallery with a recent solo exhibition at the Mexican Embassy in London.
As an educator, Lucia emphasises developing a strong understanding of clay’s qualities in all its forms, using this material knowledge as a foundation for individual expression.
